"It just made sense": Haras de Clairefontaine, on the cameras already in the barn

Marie-Laure Collet has run Haras de Clairefontaine, in Méral, Mayenne, western France, since 2008. She answered four questions, filmed in one take, no script, no voice over. She speaks French in the video; her words are translated here.

Why NOVOSTABLE

We asked what need had led her to look for a solution like ours. Her answer is not about a problem.

Using NOVOSTABLE just made sense. It is a good complement to the system we already have in place for foaling.
You have to move with the times. AI is no doubt part of our future.

She replaced nothing. The stud kept what it already had for foaling and added the AI on top. That is the most common case with us: the model measures the mare's behaviour on the cameras, recognises abnormal behaviour and calls. Whatever else the stud runs keeps running alongside.

On the cameras already there, without touching the mare

What sets NOVOSTABLE apart, in her view, comes down to two sentences.

It is practical, because it is an installation that goes on the cameras that are already there.
It is non invasive, because you do not touch the mare.

Nothing on the broodmare: no belt, no magnet, no tail sensor, nothing to reposition at night or check in the morning. And nothing to install ahead of the season: the model is already trained, a mare brought into the box in the evening is under alert that same night. The camera is only a sensor, usually the one the stud already owns.

NOVOSTABLE in three words

We always end with the same question. Her three words: intuitive, in step with the times, complementary.

How it plays out elsewhere

Several thousand broodmares went through this season with us, on three continents. What we do across a whole season, before, during and after foaling, is explained here. The accounts from Normandie Breeding and Haras de l'Aumonerie are here too.
